South Korea records second-highest daily number of coronavirus cases

South Korea on Sunday recorded its second-highest daily number of coronavirus cases, putting health officials on high alert as the Omicron variant spreads rapidly in the country.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) has reported 7,630 new infections, according to The Korea Times newspaper, bringing the total number of cases to 733,902.

The figure for the last 24 hours is the second highest since the daily record of 7,848 registered on December 15, 2021.

In mid-January, the country extended through February 6 tightening social distancing rules, including a 9:00 p.m. (local time) curfew in hotels and restricting private gatherings to avoid a major spread ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.
