South Africa once again imposes curfew and bans alcohol consumption from coronavirus

The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, announced the introduction of a new curfew in the country this Sunday, has banned the consumption of alcohol and has made the use of masks mandatory due to the increasing number of coronavirus cases.

“At the recommendation of the National Coronavirus Council, it will remain at alert level 3 for now, although we need to step up the application of existing standards and take some additional action,” said the president.

According to the local news portal News 24, Ramaphosa has announced a new curfew as an “additional measure to reduce pressure in hospitals”, to be used between 9:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m.

Alcohol consumption was also banned, as it was stated that before the spread of infections, it is “important” that hospitals are not “overloaded with alcohol-related injuries that could have been avoided”.
