An Nikkei article will ensure that Soramitsu starts testing its digital currency “White Tiger” at a university in Fukushima.
Japanese blockchain company Soramitsu announced that it will begin testing a new local digital currency aimed at Aizu University retailers.
According to a June 29 report in the Nikkei newspaper, Soramitsu will begin testing “White Tiger”.Hyperledger Iroha, a digital currency in the company’s blockchain. The digital asset is being tested in the cafés and shops of the University of Aizu. in Fukushima Prefecture, about 300 km north of Tokyo, from July 1, before gradually deploying to off-campus locations.
The launch of White Tiger is part of a smart city campaign by officials and private institutions in Aizuwakamatsu City. The participating stores can receive digital payments via smartphone or credit card applications from the region’s nearly 120,000 residents.
Tokyo-based Soramitsu is one of the blockchain startups behind the development of the central bank’s digital currency in Cambodia.
