Q: Am I the right leader to get my business off the ground?

A: Leaders are creative visionaries, sure; But not all entrepreneurs are prepared to start a business from its foundations. Randy Nelson, author of The Second Decision: The Qualified , suggests this three-step approach to decide whether or not to remain at the helm of your company.

1. Surround yourself with independent directors. Nelson, who sold two companies he founded, explains that in the beginning he relied on a group of advisors. The objective: to seek an objective opinion that would allow you to better evaluate your own strengths and weaknesses.

2. Recognize your deficiencies, and then act on them. “When you are more aware of yourself, you say 'I want to improve',” explains Nelson. He calls this step the transition from “I don't know I don't know” to “I know I don't know.”

3. Analyze your motivations. At this point in the road, entrepreneurs know what they have to do and can measure not only their capacity, but also their will. “Once you know that, the third step is to ask yourself: do I really want to do it? Maybe it's time to do something new or different, ”concludes the expert.
