A total of 13 of the 19 crew members of the ‘Curaçao Trader’ merchant ship were kidnapped in the Gulf of Guinea after a pirate attack. The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that four Ukrainian citizens have been kidnapped.
“On July 17, 2020, 13 of the 19 crew members were kidnapped following a pirate attack on the Curaçao Trader ship in the Gulf of Guinea near the Nigerian coast, 200 miles away. Four citizens of Ukraine are among them,” the news agency ministry said Interfax-Ukraine.
Ukrainian embassies in Nigeria and the United Kingdom have contacted the shipowner and operator and are trying to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
The Russian embassy in Nigeria has also mobilized to verify information about the attack on the ship, which may have crew members of Russian citizens.
