Several dead in an explosion in a Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon

At least a dozen people died and were injured in a violent explosion on Friday in the Palestinian refugee camp Borj el Chemali in southern Lebanon.

Until the official confirmation, the civil protection has confirmed the transfer of numerous dead and wounded, as the Lebanese newspaper “L’Orient Le Jour” reports. For its part, the state news agency NNA has indicated that the explosion has claimed lives.

Palestinian sources, who prefer to remain anonymous, have told the German data protection authority DPA that a fire had broken out near a mosque in the camp prior to the powerful explosion.

The fire spread to a weapons depot of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in this refugee settlement near the city of Tire, which caused the explosion.

Around 400,000 Palestinian refugees live in Lebanon, most of them are housed in twelve camps across the country. The Lebanese army has no access to these settlements due to a historic agreement that leaves everyone’s safety in the hands of the Palestinian factions.
