The President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, this Wednesday at the extraordinary summit of the EU heads of state and government demanded that they support the demands of the demonstrators in Belarus to organize new elections “as soon as possible”.
This was expressed in his intervention before EU leaders who, at a Belarus-focused summit, discussed the open crisis following the August 9 elections in which President Alexander Lukashenko won a sixth term on complaints of fraud.
Since then, massive demonstrations have taken place in Minsk and other cities in the country as Lukashenko refused to repeat the elections. The authorities harshly suppressed the protests and denounced a foreign attempt to destabilize Belarus.
“Our task is clear: to support the Belarusian people’s demand for new elections as soon as possible and to ensure that acts of violence and torture are investigated and punished,” said the Italian socialist, according to a statement from his office. Press.
