Russia reports nearly 90,000 coronavirus cases in one day for the first time

Russian authorities this Thursday reported about 90,000 cases of coronavirus in one day for the first time since the pandemic began, amid a rebound in numbers that has also claimed more than 650 lives over the past day.

The national operations center for the fight against the coronavirus has indicated that 88,816 infections and 665 deaths have been registered in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 11,404,617 and 328,770 respectively.

The number of positives tops the previous maximum set Wednesday during the day, when the country first confirmed nearly 75,000 cases, amid a surge in data in recent weeks largely attributed to the spread of the Omicron variant .

The capital Moscow appears another day as the city with the most daily cases, with more than 26,500, while cases of the Omicron variant have been confirmed in 74 of the country’s 85 regions, two more compared to Wednesday’s data.

Likewise, 29,754 people were discharged in the last day, bringing the total number of patients recovered from COVID-19 to 10,129,691, according to Russian news agency Sputnik.

On the other hand, the National Office for Consumer Protection (Rospotrebnadzor) has highlighted that more than two million people are being monitored as suspected cases of contagion.
