Russia establishes a military helicopter base in northeastern Syria

MOSCOW, Nov. 14 (Reuters / EP) –

The Russian Ministry of Defense has begun to build a military helicopter base in the city of Qamisli, in northeastern Syria, as reported on Thursday by Zvezda TV, the official television channel of the department directed by General Sergei Shoigú.

The new Russian military base will be protected by ground-to-air missile systems and already has three helicopters deployed, according to the Russian news agency Tass.

After Turkey began the military offensive in northeastern Syria in October to evict from the area the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) militia leaders, led by Kurdish fighters of the Popular Protection Units (YPG), the Turkish authorities they reached an agreement with the Moscow Government that established the deployment of Syrian regime forces supported by Russian military police in this region bordering on Turkey.
