Russia confirms a new daily maximum of coronavirus deaths and is approaching the 250,000 death threshold

Russian authorities confirmed a new maximum daily death toll from coronavirus on Tuesday, at a time the Eurasian country is nearing 250,000 deaths amid a dramatic recovery in data in recent weeks.

The National Coronavirus Action Center has said there have been 39,160 cases and 1,211 deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total since the pandemic started to 8,873,655 and 249,215 respectively.

That way, the total number of cases is lower than the maximum reported on Saturday when the country registered more than 41,300 infections while the death toll surpassed 1,200 deaths in a day for the first time.

The capital Moscow appears another day as the city with the most cases and deaths at 5,287 and 95 respectively, while Saint Petersburg had 2,680 positive and 88 deaths. For its part, the Moscow region has confirmed 2,818 cases and 47 deaths.

The agency has also stated that 32,036 people were medically discharged on the last day, bringing the total number of those recovered from COVID-19 in the country to 7,619,596, according to Russian news agency Sputnik.

Kremlin spokesman Dimitri Peskov admitted last week that “the situation is not easy,” adding that “beds are largely occupied”. “The situation is not getting any less complicated nowadays,” he said, given the data recovery and the still inadequate vaccination rates.
