Russian authorities confirmed more than 5,000 infections with the new coronavirus this Saturday as part of a pandemic that is causing more than 917,000 infections in Russia. This is still the fourth country in the world with the highest number of positive infections behind the US. Brazil and India.
The national center, which coordinates the fight against the coronavirus, reported 5,061 positives within 24 hours – 1,351 of them asymptomatic – up to a total of 917,800. Moscow with 695 and St. Petersburg with 162 are the areas with the highest number of new cases.
The death toll has risen to 15,617, 119 more than Friday, while more than 729,000 people have overcome the disease, 6,400 of whom were discharged the previous day.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this week that the country has registered a vaccine against COVID-19 – Sputnik V – that is given in two doses and guarantees immunity for two years. The government hopes to start the vaccination campaign in September, with the health and education sectors as the first target.
