NGOs that are carrying out bailouts in the Mediterranean on Tuesday asked the Italian government to release the private lifeboats that are currently being held in Italian ports.
In a joint statement, the organizations Sea-Eye, Sea-Watch and SOS Mediterranee denounced that the Italian authorities prevented these ships from sailing “for wrong reasons” to “prevent migrants rescued at sea from entering Europe “.
However, NGOs have complained of the dire humanitarian situation and have indicated that the number of migrants in need of help in the Mediterranean continues to grow. With this in mind, they asked that the ships Ocean Viking and Sea-Watch 3 be allowed to leave Sicily.
They have therefore criticized the European Union for its “failure” to deal with the crisis and demanded that Germany use its current presidency at the European Commission to introduce “solidarity distribution mechanisms for migrants”.
