Turkish Cypriot Foreign Minister Kudret Ozersay has reported Thursday that several explosions have been recorded in an arsenal in northern Cyprus.
The explosions would have taken place after a fire broke out in a military zone, where several people would have been slightly injured by broken glass.
“Unfortunately there has been a fire in an arsenal in a military zone and there have been a series of explosions,” Ozersay has confirmed. Police have asked the population to stay away from the area.
Ozersay has indicated on his Facebook page that the area has been cordoned off in the face of the progress of the deflagrations, which followed each other in the arsenal east of the town of Kyrenia, a historic port city frequented by tourists. He also said that residents who left the area at first can now return home.
The Turkish Ministry of Defense has indicated that the fire is under control and that the cause of the first explosion, which has taken place around 1.30 in the morning (local time, is unknown at the moment. An investigation team has moved to the place.
The CNN Turk television network has broadcast images that show various explosions and smokes rising skyward over the affected area.
