Protests in Mauritius after the ‘Wakashio’ oil spill

August 29, 2020

Thousands of people demonstrated this Saturday in Port Louis, the capital of the island nation of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, to protest the severity of the oil spill that occurred in July after the incident involving the Japanese ship ‘Wakashio’.

During a march, the demonstrators carried flags of the country where they saw many masks and banners with slogans such as “Your incompetence destroys our island”.

The ship ‘Wakashio’ ran aground on July 25 and poured 1,000 of the 4,000 tons of heating oil it carried. The ship was split in half and most of it sank last week.

The Japanese shipping company and the Mauritanian government are under pressure to explain why a dangerous ship is so close to the coast and why nothing was done for days after the accident.
