Protesters for and against the Thai government protest in front of the parliament

August 10, 2020

Groups of protesters for and against the Thai government gathered outside parliament on Monday as part of a series of protests against the Asian country’s constitutional reform.

Anusorn Unno, a professor at Thammasat University in Bangkok in the Thai capital, has led a group of activists who are pushing to go beyond a few “simple constitutional changes” and seek a complete overhaul of the Magna Carta.

Anti-government protesters have called for a new constitution to be introduced to prevent those who come to power through coups from taking over the executive branch for long periods, according to The Bangkok Post newspaper.

“The 2017 Constitution should extend those who carry out coups and the elite groups who support these people into power,” said Annusorn, who also chairs the US Constitution Campaign Committee for People (CCPC).
