The Portuguese Ministry of Health reported 899 new cases of coronavirus in a 24-hour period this Friday, an unprecedented number since April 10, keeping Portugal at peak levels of contagion, with at least 72,055 people diagnosed to date.
More than 47,000 people have overcome the disease while 1,936 have lost their lives, five more than on Thursday. Authorities estimate there are 23,116 active cases and 624 patients in hospitals, including 86 in intensive care.
Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa has already warned that Portugal could hit a thousand cases a day again this week, given the trend observed over the past few days. The government on Thursday agreed to extend the state of emergency until October 14 to apply restrictions against the pandemic.
