The Portuguese Ministry of Health has increased the confirmed COVID-19 cases to 53,548. Of the 325 new cases, 204 correspond to the Lisbon metropolitan area, where four of the six deaths registered in the last 24 hours were also concentrated.
The Council of Ministers has agreed to extend the state of emergency in the metropolitan area of the capital until August 31, while the rest of the region remains on alert. These measures were implemented, for example, in a time limit for bars and discos.
At least 1,770 people have died of COVID-19 in Portugal, where 39,177 patients have already been discharged since the beginning of the pandemic. More than 350 people are admitted to hospitals, 39 of whom remain in intensive care units.
Portuguese President Marceo Rebelo de Sousa has sent a message to the government and the opposition to act with a “national sense” in this crisis in both the health and economic sectors.
