French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said the suspect was dead, and that more information would be given shortly.
An Interior Ministry source told NBC News that two other people had been killed inside the store.
Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said that “all the information suggests that this is a terrorist act,” and the Paris prosecutors’ office said an anti-terrorism investigation had begun.
The attack began at 10:30 a.m. local time (5:30 a.m. ET) when the suspect fired at police officers who were out jogging, Philippe said.
One of the officers was struck in the shoulder. The suspect then took hostages in the nearby store.
