Poland has a new record of entry attempts across the border with Belarus

Polish authorities warned on Friday that the country has registered a record number of migrants trying to enter the country across the border with Belarus.

According to the government, border guards have detected 529 entry attempts in the past 24 hours. For example, the authorities have confirmed that 18 people from Iraq were arrested while trying to set foot on Polish soil, although the rest did not get through.

Four other people were also arrested for alleged complicity in this type of crossing. You are a Lebanese citizen, a Pole and two Ukrainians. Throughout September there were 7,535 attempts to illegally enter Poland from Belarus, although only 120 cases were found in all of 2020.

Poland, Latvia and Lithuania have reported an increasing number of migrant crossings in recent months. For its part, the European Union has accused the Belarusian government of using “migrants as a hybrid weapon” against the Community bloc in retaliation for the sanctions imposed in the course of the 2020 election process.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has said that Minsk refuses to continue containing irregular migrants trying to reach European Union countries, as Belarus “has neither the money nor the strength”.

Poland is building a fence along the 418-kilometer-long border, which is largely made up of dense forest, and on September 2 declared a state of emergency, which has now been extended, and which affects a three-kilometer-wide border strip.

For their part, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have called for an “immediate investigation” after the deaths of four migrants on the border between Belarus and Poland.
