Poland defends the construction of a fence on the border with Belarus

In a message on the social network Twitter, the Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak defended the decision of the Polish government to build a barbed wire fence on the border with Belarus.

“Without the fence and the good cooperation between soldiers and border guards, we would have a migration crisis like 2015,” the official wrote.

The Polish authorities are also planning to replace the current fence with a more permanent structure, which they are calling a barrier rather than a wall.

Last Friday alone, according to the border guards, there were 592 attempts to illegally cross the border between Belarus and Poland.

This week the Polish parliament amended a law allowing local border guards to deport people who illegally cross the border, a decision that, according to UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, affects people’s right to asylum.

Warsaw accuses the Belarusian government of encouraging migration flows at the border in retaliation for the sanctions that the European Union imposed on President Alexander Lukashenko after the controversial elections in August 2020.
