Chilean President Sebastián Piñera suspended his European tour this Thursday due to the increase in coronavirus cases in the country and the restriction in the Santiago metropolitan area.
The announcement of the suspension comes one day after the announcement that the President will travel to Europe from June 22nd to meet with Pope Francis; the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson; including the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the President of France, Emmanuel Macron.
Piñera’s trip provoked criticism because of the health situation in the country, which prompted the executive on Thursday to order imprisonment in the metropolitan area, reports the Chilean media ‘La Tercera’.
The Chilean government spokesman Jaime Bellolio has announced the cancellation of the tour for “health reasons only”.
“Due to the development of the pandemic, this tour has been postponed. However, we will continue to advance essential matters through digital tools and telematics sessions until sanitary conditions allow the tour to be postponed and the necessary face-to-face interviews to be carried out.” Meeting, “announced the government later.
According to the Chilean Ministry of Health, the country has 1,453,478 cases and 30,339 deaths, while the serious situation in the Santiago metropolitan area requires quarantine from this Saturday, despite advances in vaccinations.
