Peru updates its records and tops half a million cases and 25,000 deaths

The Peruvian Ministry of Health reported this Thursday that after a review and update of its records in the Andean country, it had 507,996 positive results while the death toll is 25,648.

“3,658 additional deaths have been classified as COVID-19 confirmed deaths,” Deputy Health Minister Luis Suárez told a press conference.

The update came days after the current and youngest Minister of Health, Pilar Mazzetti, announced that the ministry was preparing a more comprehensive review of the number of deaths following the difference in registration between the portfolio it managed and the information system National Death Certificate (SINADEF).

Although the Ministry of Health confirms the deaths whose patients have a positive COVID-19 test, SINADEF considers “deaths from pneumonia or heart attacks to be suspicious” because “the respective autopsies cannot be performed in this context”.
