August 27, 2020

The NGO Oxfam Intermón warned this Wednesday that the gap between rich and poor has widened significantly since the coronavirus pandemic in the Middle East, which saw billionaires see their wealth grow by about $ 10 billion (about 8,400 million euros) Outbreak of the health crisis.

This amount, as stated in a statement by the organization, is almost double that required for the reconstruction of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, after the explosion of around 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate, which was recorded in early August and left more than 180 dead and 6,000 wounded.

As Oxfam has warned, 11 percent of the population now accounts for 74 percent of the region’s total income, which is why the region’s governments have been urged to take urgent action against this inequality.
