The Turkish authorities have reported the arrest of 402 people over the past 42 days for distributing “unfounded or provocative” information about the coronavirus on social media.
The Home Office has posted on Twitter that 855 suspects have been identified, but only 402 were arrested after 6,362 accounts publishing this type of content were discovered.
Turkey confirmed its first case of coronavirus on March 11, and has since then found 110,130 infections and 2,805 deaths according to the latest official report on Sunday.
By November 2019, the International Press Institute estimated that Turkey had detained 120 journalists for allegedly participating in the failed 2016 coup d’état. After the attempted attack, arrests and trials of officials, judges, politicians and journalists have multiplied.
