The violence in the German city of Leipzig continued on Saturday evening after a demonstration against gentrification in the Connewitz district and the eviction of “squatters” due to the lack of affordable housing.
Police evacuated the concentration after demonstrators threw stones at the windows of nearby buildings, a DPA reporter reported.
Two police officers were injured and several people were arrested, the police reported early on Sunday. Tram traffic has been interrupted and a police helicopter flies over the affected area.
According to initial estimates by the police, around 500 people took part in this concentration. About 150 remained in it after midnight when they painted graffiti on a tram, barricaded the street, and set containers on fire.
