Now its DTV in cars
(2 October 2001)
In November, Germany’s BMW will launch 7 new series of automobiles that will be the first to include internet access and digital TV (DTV) reception as standard features.
BMW’s 7 series feature a large multimedia display on the dashboard and independent screens for the passengers. The internet connection uses the GSM network, and in-car TV reception will be possible from day one, as a result of the major efforts of Germany’s broadcasters to develop mobile TV.
BMW is a forerunner of the MCP (Multimedia Car Platform), which includes 13 other automobile and computing manufacturers, who plan to release specifications for a universal standard to enable cars with broadband technology. The standard should be ready by next year, and will be based around a 16 Mb/s data stream attainable at speeds up to 150 mph.
Apart from television, music, games and web browsing, specific services such as route planners and interactive car manuals are in the works.
