North Korea blames the US for increasing tensions on the Korean peninsula

North Korea has blamed the United States on Wednesday for increasing tensions on the Korean peninsula, after criticizing in recent weeks its joint military exercise with South Korea.

“The unchanged hostile policy of the United States is pushing our country to take self-defense countermeasures to get rid of potential and direct threats,” said the North Korean official newspaper 'Rodong Sinmun'.

Citing the joint exercise that ended on Tuesday, the newspaper has blamed Washington for increasing tensions, which, he said, could hamper efforts for a constructive dialogue.

“Our consistent stance is that we oppose the confrontations of power and pressure to improve bilateral relations with the United States and build a lasting and solid peace on the Korean peninsula through talks and negotiations,” the newspaper added.

Pyongyang has criticized in recent weeks the joint military exercises between Seoul and Washington, which it has described as an “aggressive war exercise” against North Korea.

The criticism of the official North Korean newspaper 'Rodong Sinmun', has occurred a few days after the end of the joint military drill and the United States special representative for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, arrived in Seoul to meet with members of the South Korean government
