Nicaraguans are collecting signatures to support the establishment of a life sentence for hate crimes

Hundreds of Nicaraguan citizens have signed letters to the Supreme Court and the National Assembly in support of the government’s call for life imprisonment for hate crimes.

“The undersigned, concerned and dismayed by the rise in cruel, cruel, hateful, aberrant, inhuman, humiliating and degrading crimes (…) urge you to develop and pass laws that effectively punish these crimes,” the statement said Letter published by the official news portal El 19 Digital.

The text thus reflects the impact, shock, rejection, outrage and disgust of Nicaraguan society which provoke this type of crime and which constitutes “serious violations of the human rights of victims and their families” of those targeted by them.

The document asks that those guilty of these crimes be punished with life imprisonment, as current sentences for these crimes are not proportional to the harm they cause.
