TUNISIA, Sep. 19 (Reuters / EP) –

Former Tunisian President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali, exiled in Saudi Arabia since his overthrow in early 2011, has died Thursday at 83 years of age, days after his environment recognized a deterioration in his state of health.

“Ben Ali has just died in Saudi Arabia,” said his lawyer, Mounir Ben Salha, in statements to the Reuters agency.

Ben Ali, 83 years old, went into exile in Riyadh after being overthrown during the Jasmine Revolution of 2011, which triggered the Arab Spring, after more than 20 years in power.

Tunisian Justice has sentenced Ben Ali to 35 years in prison for corruption and torture and another 20 years for inciting murder and looting.
