NEW YORK, 30 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The spokesman of the Republican Party in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, explained Monday that the upper house will have no “choice” to process the impeachment process against the president of the United States, Donald Trump, if it is finally approved by a majority in the House of Representatives. The Democratic opposition has a majority in the House, while Republicans control the Senate.
“The rules of the Senate force us to assume it if the House is going that way. We will follow the rules of the Senate,” McConnell said in an interview with the CNBC network. In response to the question of whether the Senate will activate the impeachment, McConnell has indicated that “he would have no choice but to activate it following the Senate regulations on the presidential dismissal process.”
McConnell has explained that the Senate regulation requires the processing of any initiative for the presidential impeachment process and has stressed that this regulation could be modified with only 67 votes, so “I have no alternative” but to assume the 'impeachment'. “What is late is a different matter,” he said.
The Democratic majority of the House announced last week the start of the process to open a political trial against Trump over his pressures on the new Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, to investigate the business activity of the son of one of his political rivals, former vice president Joe Biden.
After the Democratic announcement, McConnell declined to value the initiative and avoided “assessing hypothetical situations.” “I think it's very premature,” he said then.
