MADRID, Aug 21 (EUROPE PRESS) –
The attorney general of the Dominican Republic, Jean Alain Rodríguez, reported Tuesday at a press conference that the country's biggest drug trafficking band, to which two former baseball players allegedly belong, had been dismantled, thanks to the more than 40 raids carried out by security forces.
Anti-drug authorities arrested the former baseball launcher Octavio Dotel on Tuesday. In the appearance, Rodriguez also pointed to Luis Castillo, another former player, as part of the band.
The head of the criminal organization has been identified as Cesar Emilio Peralta aka 'Cesar the Abuser', who is currently on the run. The exact involvement of Dotel and Castillo in the drug trafficking network is unknown.
“We have carried out the largest operation in the fight against drugs in our country,” Rodriguez said. “We managed to identify the leaders of the network, as well as countless individuals who serve as frontmen to launder and hide the profits of drug trafficking,” he said.
On the other hand, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Department of the Treasury issued a statement in which they point to eight more Dominican citizens as part of the criminal network and indicate that Peralta controls several nightclubs from where they handle criminal operations.
“César Emilio Peralta and his criminal organization have used violence and corruption in the Dominican Republic to traffic tons of cocaine and opioids into the United States and Europe,” said Deputy Secretary of Terrorism of the Treasury Department, Sigal Mandelker. The US Department of the Treasury “is targeting these Dominican drug traffickers, their representatives and the nightclubs they have used for money laundering and trafficking of women,” he said.
Castillo, who retired from the big leagues in 2011 after playing 15 seasons, denied on Twitter his involvement with the criminal gang: “The truth is that my country is no longer useful, my God. You believe that I after making millions of dollars in baseball I'm going to get my hands dirty with drugs. ”
Dotel also played for 15 seasons for several teams and both players have been recognized with international titles.
