MADRID, Aug. 20 (EUROPE PRESS) –
The prosecutor of Agrigento, Luigi Patronaggio, arrived on Tuesday in Lampedusa in order to closely follow the “explosive situation” aboard the Open Arms and is expected to get on board the rescue ship of the Spanish NGO, according to the Italian agency AdnKronos.
“The situation in the 'Open Arms' ship is explosive, of utmost urgency,” said the prosecutor before flying by helicopter to Lampedusa, an island in front of which the ship has been anchored since last Friday.
“I am going to Lampedusa to return calm and so that no one is harmed,” added the attorney, who is accompanied by two specialized doctors and who, according to the agency, could get on board.
Patronaggio, who coordinates the investigation of kidnapping of people aboard the Spanish rescue ship, is going to board the ship to see the situation first hand.
According to Proactiva Open Arms, “on board the situation is at the limit”. Early in the morning, one of the migrants and refugees who still remain on board after 19 days has launched into the sea to try to reach land.
This was followed a little later by a second group of nine others and in the last hour another five people have been “rescued and taken to port” after launching into the sea, according to the NGO on Twitter.
