The New Zealand authorities reported on Monday that the country will return to Coronavirus Pandemic Level 2 on Thursday if it can reopen the country’s cinemas, cafes, gyms and shopping centers.
The reopening will take place just over a month after the government introduced Highest Alert 4 last month. Since then, strict measures have been taken across the country to slow the spread of the virus.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has indicated that the move to level 2 restrictions implies that restaurants and other public areas such as parks may reopen on Thursday, according to local newspaper The New Zealand Herald.
“I announce that the cabinet is willing to go to alarm 2 to reopen the economy, always in the safest way,” he said during a press conference.
