New Zealand issues tsunami warning after 7.2 magnitude earthquake

New Zealand authorities issued a tsunami warning Thursday after a 7.2-magnitude Ritcher-scale earthquake hit the east coast of the North Island.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake, the hypocenter of which is at a depth of 10 kilometers, occurred at 2:27 in the morning.

The authorities have asked the population to move to higher areas given the intensity of the earthquake, which the New Zealand Herald newspaper said was “severe”.
