New Zealand announces that it will be free of COVID-19 after the last case is restored

June 8, 2020

The New Zealand Department of Health announced on Monday that there were no registered active cases of COVID-19 after the last patient, an Auckland woman, had shown no symptoms in the past 48 hours.

Health Director-General Ashley Bloomfield stressed that this was “important” news, but stressed that “vigilance towards COVID-19 remains and will continue to be essential”.

So far, the last case corresponded to a 50-year-old woman living in a residence in Auckland in the north of the archipelago. This is evident from the ministry’s report.

“This is very good news for the person concerned, and it is also something the rest of New Zealand can look forward to,” said Bloomfield.
