New York police officer arrested for spying on China

Baimadajie Angwang, a New York police officer, was arrested Monday for allegedly spying on China.

According to the complaint, Angwang “directed and controlled” the officials held by the Chinese government at the New York Consulate to report on the activities of ethnic Tibetan citizens.

He is also accused of evaluating Tibetan intelligence sources and using his position as a police officer to give the Chinese authorities access to senior officials. In addition, as reported by the ABC network, Anwang is accused of fraud, made false statements and obstructed official proceedings.

The 33-year-old detainee belongs to the Tibetan ethnic group but is a naturalized American. The complaint states that she describes herself as an “asset” of China.

The US Federal Police (FBI) has reported that since June 2018, Angwang has “frequently” communicated with a member of the Chinese consulate, which it calls the “chief”. Also, from 2014 to 2017, he was seen entering the premises of the Chinese Consulate on numerous occasions.
