The NGO MSF has denounced this Thursday that a “disinformation epidemic” has a “negative” impact on the national response to the coronavirus pandemic in Colombia.
“In the more than four months that have passed since the first patient was identified, the population has received contradicting or directly false messages that have been circulated on the media and social networks. This inaccurate information has generated fear of medical help and places at risk Health workers, “warned the NGO in a statement.
MSF has said it has experienced this situation in the Tumaco community and in the Norte de Santander department, where it has realigned its primary care and mental health operations to help the public health system respond to COVID-19 support.
“In the course of their activities, the teams have been able to confirm the spread of false claims about the existence of a suspected COVID-19 cartel that invented the disease and paid doctors millions of pesos for each patient who died,” he said.
