Russian authorities on Wednesday declared a worker at the Bulgarian embassy in the country “persona non grata” in response to a similar move by Sofia that expelled a Russian employee in April.
In a statement, the Bulgarian government confirmed that Ambassador Atanus Krystin had received a message declaring the persona “persona non grata” after being summoned by the Russian Foreign Ministry.
“This is a response to the decision made in April of this year. The Bulgarian side then declared an employee of the Russian embassy in Sofia to be a persona non grata,” the text reads.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has confirmed what happened, indicating that Krystin “received the news during a visit to the ministerial headquarters.”
