Moreno declares an exception in Ecuador’s prisons for the “chaos” caused by “the mafias”.

The President of Ecuador, Lenín Moreno, declared a state of emergency in all prisons of the country for two weeks this Tuesday due to the “chaos of the” Mafias “which has recorded more than a dozen deaths within its walls in the last year.

“In view of the grave events, I have ordered a state of emergency in the country’s prisons so that the armed forces can take control of the mafias who are wreaking havoc in the prisons,” he reported on his Twitter account.

Moreno’s announcement came shortly after the deaths of two prisoners in the Cotopaxi Province prison in central Ecuador, after a battle was announced.

Since the beginning of the month there have been several clashes in various prisons around the country, in which nearly fifteen prisoners have died, including that of an Israeli citizen in a Guayaquil prison.
