Monsoon rains leave at least 14 dead and more than 250,000 displaced in Sri Lanka

At least 14 people have died in Sri Lanka as a result of the monsoon rains that struck various regions of the country in the past two days, causing more than 250,000 people to leave their homes.

Torrential rains devastated parts of the west, south and central parts of the country, causing landslides to bury dozens of homes and their residents.

Among them are four members of the same family who died buried in the city of Aranayaka, 90 kilometers east of the capital Colombo, according to the country’s Disaster Management Center.

The adverse weather is set to continue across the country for the next few days, as authorities have issued high alert in all cities before the rivers are flooded, particularly in the western province, which is closest to Colombo.
