Minnesota intensifies charges against the agent responsible for Floyd’s death and accuses three other officials involved

June 3, 2020

The Minnesota state attorney’s office decided this Wednesday to tighten the other three on the charges against Derek Chauvin, the agent who knocked George Floyd, the black man who died from Minneapolis police, with his knee police officers involved in his arrest.

According to court records, Chauvin has now been charged with second-degree murder and charges have also been brought against agents Thoomas Lane, J.A. Keung and Tou Thao for complicity in second-degree and second-degree crimes.

Benjamin Crump, an attorney for the Floyd family whose case sparked worldwide protests, has argued that this is a “bittersweet” moment. “We are pleased that the Attorney General made this decision, arrested and imprisoned them all, and tightened the charges against Chauvin,” he said.

Before hearing about the prosecutor’s decision, Crump had said he expected all officials involved in Floyd’s death to be indicted. “These are people who refuse to listen, people who supposedly should. The police are supposed to be there to protect and serve George Floyd,” he said.
