August 30, 2020

Japanese government spokesman Yoshihide Suga is among the candidates to replace the country’s prime minister Shinzo Abe, who announced his resignation on Friday, the official Kyodo news agency reported on Saturday, citing various government sources.

According to sources, Suga has already informed the general secretary of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Toshihiro Nikai, of his decision to enter the race for the next prime minister.

In addition to Suga, former Foreign and Defense Ministers Fumio Kishida and Shigeru Ishiba are also on the list of candidates to replace Abe at the head of the Japanese government.
