Michel reaffirmed Putin that the solution to the crisis in Belarus will come through internal dialogue

European Council President Charles Michel insisted on Thursday to Russian President Vladimir Putin that resolving the political crisis in Belarus requires inclusive political dialogue and a democratic transition.

This was relayed in a phone call to the Russian head of state, to whom he shared the conclusions of the extraordinary meeting of EU heads of state and government. On Wednesday, European leaders agreed to sanction Belarus and opened up to democratic transition. In addition, they agreed not to accept the election result and offered support to Belarusian civil society.

“I repeated this to Putin. There is only one way out through an inclusive political dialogue and a democratic and peaceful process,” said the Belgian politician in a comment on his Twitter. This is the second contact this week between the President of the Council and the Russian President, with whom he has undertaken to monitor the situation in Belarus.

Putin, for his part, has stressed that it would be “counterproductive” to put pressure on the leadership in Belarus and intervene in the country’s internal processes.
