Mexico is approaching 50,000 coronavirus cases that coincide with a localized restart of activities

May 18, 2020

Almost 50,000 people have been infected with the new corona virus in Mexico, a country where more than 5,000 people are now dying and which will be active again this Monday in more than 300 “hope communities” with little or no transmission of the virus.

Deputy Minister of Health Hugo López-Gatell has reported 2,075 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the preliminary balance to 49,219. At least 5,177 people have died from COVID-19, the disease caused by this pandemic, 132 more than on Saturday.

Mexico City and the states of Tabasco, Morelos and Yucatan are the areas with the highest incidence of active cases, while more than 300 municipalities are expected to resume activities within the so-called “new normal” this Monday.

López-Gatell has warned that the list “changes” and depends on whether the risk remains low in these areas. With that in mind, he cited the Copala case in Veracruz, which, after registering a new positive this Sunday, will not be able to resume activities this Monday as planned, according to local media.
