Mexico confirms more than 39,000 cases and 500 deaths from COVID-19 among health workers

The Ministry of Health reported a total of 191,410 cases of coronavirus and 23,377 deaths this Tuesday, and reports that 39,032 health professionals have contracted the disease, while 584 have died.

Epidemiology Director General José Luis Alomía has indicated that the number could increase in the coming hours as 13,145 suspected cases are investigated by health professionals, including doctors, nurses, and laboratory officials who may have signed a contract with COVID-19.

According to Alomia, another 27 could be added to the 484 deaths that are still being analyzed. Nursing staff make up 41 percent of those infected within the sector, while doctors make up 30 percent, four percentage points more than laboratory staff.

As of the rest of Tuesday, health officials recorded 793 new deaths and 6,288 infections, with Mexico City being the highest number of diagnosed cases at 43,596, followed by the state of Mexico at 30,011.
