Merkel calls for the strengthening of democratic principles in Europe

June 27, 2020

Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for the strengthening of democratic principles and the rule of law in the European Union (EU) shortly before Germany takes over the presidency of the European Council on July 1, as she said in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung

The President asked for understanding for the Eurosceptic positions of the Eastern European countries, given the “second dictatorship” that was established in the region after the fall of National Socialism.

“The countries of the Eastern Bloc had only a few years to form their national identity. As a result, they later began to develop processes that the Western countries could experience much more in advance,” said Merkel.

“On the one hand, many countries that have become members relatively recently shared enthusiasm for the European Union as the fruit of peace, but on the other hand they are skeptical of Europe. We have to understand this position,” he added in some. Comments that take place just before the presidential election in Poland, a country whose relations with the EU have been strained in recent months.
