Mahinda Rajapaksa’s party beats preliminary results for women parliamentarians in Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan Popular Front (SLPP) of Prime Minister and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is on the front line in the parliamentary elections held in the country on Wednesday, according to preliminary results.

At the moment the SLPP would have won 67.70 percent of the support, followed by the opposition alliance Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) of the opposition leader Sajith Premadasa with 19.34 percent of the support.

This alliance was established in the run-up to the elections and welcomes the former chairman of the Sri Lanka National Unity Party (UNP). It is followed by Jathika Jana Balawegaya with 4.81 votes, while the UNP under the leadership of former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has received only 2 percent of the support so far, according to the newspaper ‘Adaderana’. .

The elections have been postponed since April due to the coronavirus pandemic, although the situation was under control with fewer than 3,000 cases and 11 deaths across the country.
