MADRID, Aug 21 (EUROPE PRESS) –
The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, confirmed on Tuesday contacts with the United States for months and said they take place under his authorization.
“I confirm that for months there have been contacts of senior officials of the United States Government, Donald Trump, and the Bolivarian Government that I preside, under my express, direct authorization,” said the Venezuelan president. “Of course there is contact and there will still be contact,” he said.
Maduro's statements come after the US president, Donald Trump, confirmed contacts with the Venezuelan regime “at a very high level”, although he refused to clarify whether among these contacts is the head of the National Constituent Assembly and 'number two' of the Party United Socialist of Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello.
Sources consulted by the Axios portal have indicated that in recent months there have been contacts through emissaries between Diosdado Cabello, one of the strong men of Chavismo, with a head of the US National Security Council who is identified as Mauricio Claver-Carone .
The Trump Administration regards Cabello as a key actor and believes that if he had supported the failed coup d'etat of April 30, when the self-proclaimed president Juan Guaidó announced that the armed forces supported him but that was not the case, the assault would have prospered, According to the sources.
Cabello responded to this information on Monday to deny the alleged contacts with Washington. “The empire is very arrogant, so they believe that they will divide us with gossip,” said the president of the National Constituent Assembly.
