The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, has indicated that Spain must seek “forgiveness” from the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean for the “crimes” of conquering America, after Pope Francis or the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, have themselves uttered on this line in the last few days.
“Spain must find great recognition and, from the soul of good Spain, seek forgiveness from the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean of all people for the terrible crime committed against our grandparents and grandmothers,” he said. during his Sunday speech on taking stock of the COVID-19 pandemic in Venezuela.
He has accused “European colonialism” of “massacre, plunder, theft, enslavement of the whole of America” and, according to VTV, emphasized the “millions” of slaves who died under these circumstances. It’s not the first time Maduro has apologized to Spain for conquering America.
“This is what (the former president) José María Aznar does not want to see in his persistent colonialist, racist vision (…)” he added, emphasizing, “he does not want to see the Spanish colonialism that he is defended, massacred, murdered, exiled, enslaved millions of indigenous people and later enslaved, massacred and disappeared more than 50 million grandparents and grandmothers of Africa brought to these countries as slaves from Africa ”.
The Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez also alluded to Aznar’s defense of the conquest of America and described his “racist ridicule” as “deplorable”.
“Evidence of the apology for the crimes of conquest, slavery, annihilation and his supremacist thinking,” he pointed out on his Twitter account before describing his words as an “unbearable insult” to America. The former president has already stated that he will not apologize for conquering America.
