French President Emmanuel Macron stressed on Tuesday that France “will always be on the side of the Lebanese people” while stressing the values of freedom, dialogue and coexistence in the land of the cedar trees.
“I say it on behalf of the French: we will always be on the side of the Lebanese people,” said the French president on Tuesday in a message posted on Twitter during his official visit to Lebanon. “Freedom, dialogue and coexistence are lifelong values in Lebanon,” said the French head of state after he planted a cedar tree in a forest north of Beirut to commemorate Lebanon’s centenary. Macron has stressed that Lebanon will be “born again”.
The French President’s message comes after the brutal explosion in the port of Beirut on August 4th, which killed more than 180 people, injured more than 6,000 and displaced more than 300,000.
At the scene of the explosion in Beirut, the French President made it clear that Lebanon needs to implement a series of reforms in areas such as public procurement, the judiciary, the banking system and electricity supply.
